A HERO’S HOMECOMING: CHECKERED FLAG FOUNDATION TEAMS UP WITH BLACK PAW CANINE TO PROVIDE CERTIFIED SERVICE CANINE TO DESERVING US ARMY VETERAN
Brad Keselowski’s Checkered Flag Foundation (BKCFF) recently celebrated the graduation of service canine Rage to her new owner and handler, United States Army Veteran Scott Craig. Rage became the third certified service canine to be awarded to a deserving military veteran through the BKCFF Service Dog Fund, a grant program that sponsors the full cost of preparing and training canines for veteran service through the experienced training team at Black Paw Canine. Part of the Checkered Flag Foundation’s mission is to honor and assist those who sacrifice greatly for our country by supporting veterans during their journey back to civilian life.
Meet the Heroes
US Army Veteran Scott Craig: Scott Craig joined the Army in April of 2006 and trained as an Indirect Fire infantryman in Fort Benning, GA. Upon earning his cross riffles, he immediately began his paratrooper training. As a brand new Private, Scott was the only enlisted soldier to earn his Expert Infantryman badge in his company after the brigade’s extensive three-week training exercise. In 2007, Scott was serving a 15-month deployment in Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. During that time, he was awarded the Purple Heart for a gunshot wound he sustained during battle. Scott served multiple deployments before experiencing a knee injury brought about by helping a fellow solider during an attack. Scott medically retired from the Army as a Sergeant in 2013. He now supports his wife Kristine, who recently retired from the U.S. Army as a SFC Intel Analyst, and their three young children. Scott also spends his time supporting various military-related organizations such as the USC Veterans Association and Friends of the 66th.
Certified Service Dog Rage: Rage is a four-year-old German shepherd. She loves to go for walks, cuddle, explore and share her fun attitudes with those around her. Her training with Black Paw Canine has included obedience, alert training, and environmental awareness. Her job in the past included training puppies to be good dogs and alerting her handler to people and animals that shouldn’t be in the area. Her favorite part of training has been working with children of all ages. Rage will make the perfect addition to the Scott Craig and his family!
